SAILOR LAD DROWNED
WHILE LAKE SWIMMING

  Word was received here Tuesday that George E. Stirewalt, 24, a navy radar 
man, formerly of Idaho county was drowned Monday in Lake Garrett, near 
Seattle, when he apparently was seized with cramps while swimming.  He was 
visiting at the home of his brother Howard, formerly of Grangeville, when the 
tragedy occurred. 
  No details have been received here, but his mother, Mrs. Delsa Starwalt, 
Harpster, has requested that the body be brought here for burial and 
arrangements are awaiting word from the Navy department and her son in Seattle.
  George E. Starwalt was born in Arlington, Washington, June 7, 1921.  He 
lived with his mother at Harpster where he received his schooling.  He entered 
the Civilian Conservation Corps and was employed by them for some time, 
afterward joining the Navy, in which he had been four and one-half years.  
Starwalt was home last April on leave and had since been taking specialized 
training in radar work.  He had served aboard ship in numerous fields.
  Survivors include his mother, Delsa Stirewalt, Harpster; father, William 
Starwalt, White Bird; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Nedrow, Grangeville; four 
brothers, Howard, Seattle; Earl and William of the Salmon river district, and 
Johnny of Bremerton, Washington.

STIREWALT DROWNED IN
LAKE, SERVICES FRIDAY

  Funeral services for George E. Stirewalt, RDM2/c, who drowned in Lake 
Garrett near Seattle on July 1, will be held in the Hancock Chapel in 
Grangeville at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13.  Rev. John Rice will officiate at the 
services and burial in Prairie View cemetery will be in charge of Co. B, 5th 
Infantry, Idaho State Guard, with full military honors.  The body is due to 
arrived here today from Seattle.
  At first burial was to take place in Seattle, near the home of a brother, 
Howard Stirewalt, at whose place George was visiting when he met his tragic 
death.  Upon the request of the mother, Mrs. Delsa Stirewalt, it was decided 
to bring the body to Idaho for burial.

SERVICE MEN CARRY
COMRADE TO GRAVE

  Pallbearers for the services of George Edward Stirewalt, REM 2/c, here 
Friday afternoon, July 13, who drowned in Lake Garrett on July 1, were all 
personnel of WWII as follows: Pvt. Wesley O. Harris, U.S.M.C.; Arthur W. 
Johnson, HA 1/c, Navy, who had accompanied the body here as military escort; 
James R. Gentry, RM 2/c; Cpl. Jay Dye. A.A.F.; Sgt. Glenn H. Carpenter; J.C. 
Gordon, S 2/c.
  Rev. John Rice, chaplain of American Legion Post No. 37, officiated at the 
services at Hancock Chapel and burial was in Prairie View cemetery.  Military 
honors were furnished by a firing squad from Co. B, 5th Infantry, Idaho State 
Guard.  Music at the services was furnished by Mrs. John Lukens and Mrs. 
William Foster.
