W. O. Benthin officiated. Interment was in Vineland cemetery at Clarkston, Washington. Sarah Jane Higgins Tipton was born in Missouri, February 7, 1843. When four years old she accompanied her parents across the plains in covered wagon to Oregon, the trip requiring six months, and emigrants were in great danger from hostile Indians at many times. They located in the Willamette river valley where Sarah Jane grew to womanhood. In the 60’s the family removed to Roseburg, Ore., where on July 16, 1865, Sarah Jane Higgins was united in marriage to James Harrison Tipton. Mr. and Mrs. Tipton came to Idaho county and took up a homestead in 1883 where the family home was maintained until removal to Clarkston, Wn, in 1902. Born to the couple were three daughters, Cynthia E. Tipton Chase, born July 20, 1866, and died Nov. 25, 1901; Belle E. Tipton Yates, born June 12, 1872, and died April 12, 1902, and Amy Tipton who died in infancy. Upon Mr. Tipton’s death in Clarkston in 1907, Mrs. Tipton returned to Idaho county and resided near Kooskia for many years. She was a member of the Presbyterian church at Kooskia. Surviving are five grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 10 great, great grandchildren.
