He was born Aug. 15, 1937, in Alton, Ill., and later lived in Long Lake, Ill., Phoenix and Flagstaff, Ariz., and finally, Kamiah. After graduation he worked until he had enough money to pay for one year's tuition and expenses at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. He moved to Arizona in 1957. He became an active shooter, hunter and explorer. He helped build a trap range at Lake Mary, south of Flagstaff. Trips of exploration included much of the Navajo Reservation and the Arizona Strip, the area between the Grand Canyon and Utah. Paved roads, gas stations and English speakers were scarce in those days.
