He was born January 13, 1924, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Heston and Florence Bartoo where he attended high school and was involved with baseball, gymnastics, swimming and diving. Upon graduation, he entered the Air Force and was first stationed in Norfolk, Va. He was later assigned to Fairchild Air Force Base and while in Spokane met the love of his life, Dolores "Dee" Barbour. They were married Dec. 18, 1946, in Denver, Colo. Together they had two children, Peggy of Austin, Texas, and Gary of Coeur d'Alene. Duke was a very loving, attentive father who always put his family first. After being discharged from the service, where he attained the rank of captain, he became a Spokane County sheriff's deputy. Later, working in advertising, he became a managing supervisor for the Spokesman-Review and retired in 1986 after 25 years. He joined the Washington State Air National Guard in 1985 and served until retirement as an officer. He enjoyed golf and handball and had many friends in the Spokane area. He and Dee enjoyed dancing and socializing and in retirement, loved to take short trips to golf and to sit in front of the occasional slot machine. Now together again, Dee prededed him in death, passing on Oct. 11, 1996. He is survived by his daughter Peggy Barteau, Austin, Texas; son Gary Bartoo and wife Amy of Coeur d'Alene; former daughter-in-law Kayleen Florey and husband Les; granddaughters Libby Baldwin and Elysia Morrison; grandsons Gabe Bartoo and wife Anna, Josh and Trey Bartoo; great granddaughter Marli Jane Koba; sister Jewel Wallace and husband Jack of Sanborn, N.Y.; brother Herbert "Buck" Fitzpatrick and wife Joy of Coeur d'Alene; brother William "Bill" Fitzpatrick and wife Judy of Youngstown, N. Y.; many nieces and nephews and the gang at Waffles Plus and Quest Casino, Spokane. Duke's legacy as a special and loving husband, brother, and father will be well remembered, as was his ability to be a special friend. He touched many lives with his friendship and sense of humor and left this world a better place. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene.
