Private services will be held. Bart was born on July 30, 1923, on a farm in Cornelius, Ore., the son of Fred and Jessie (Akins) Bowlby Sr. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, Ore. in 1942. After graduating high school, he worked on the farm and then went to work as a draftsman in the Portland shipyards. In 1947, Bart flew to Fairbanks, Alaska, where the job market led him into the field of finish carpentry. In the early 1950s, he homesteaded in Kenny Lake, Alaska, and worked for the famous outdoor hunting guide, Don DeHart. He married Elaine Boettger on Feb. 9, 1952, in Tijuana, Mexico. Bart and his wife Elaine had two sons, Clyde Barton in 1957 and John Emmett in 1960. The family moved to Birchwood, Alaska, so the kids could attend school. Bart was an avid gun collector and Civil War enthusiast. He loved to work on old cars and build muzzleloader guns, he loved to tinker. Richard Barton leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Elaine Marie Bowlby of Athol, Idaho; son, Clyde Bowlby of Spokane, Wash., former daughter-in-law, Deborah Martin; grandchildren, Emmett Bowlby, U.S. Army specialist and his wife, Rita, of Fort Hood, Texas, Kyle Bowlby of Athol, Idaho, and Kymberly Bowlby of Spirit Lake, Idaho. Bart was preceded in death by his parents, son John Emmett Bowlby in 1973, two brothers and one sister. Alaska was his home and always will be. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Coffelt Funeral Service.
