She was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Chilton County, Ala., the daughter and third child of Eufa Myers Brown and Leatha Camilla Wilson Brown, natives of Chilton County. Melba married Paul Elwood Hughes on Feb. 25, 1939, in Liberty County, Ga., who is now a resident of California. During her lifetime, Melba lived in eight states, including Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Oklahoma and Idaho, and in Germany. She had many dear friends throughout the United States. Melba was a bookkeeper, craftsperson, wonderful seamstress, and was known for her published book of poems, "To You From Me." For the past 4 1/2 years she had been a resident at Bestland Retirement Home in Coeur d'Alene. She is survived by sons Paul E. Hughes Jr. of Oklahoma City and Walter Chase Hughes (Jerry Phelps), Dalton Gardens; longtime caregiver and loving friend, Priscilla Blumenstock, Dalton Gardens; sister Mary L. Brown Flowers and husband Roy B., Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great- grandchildren; five nieces and 10 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. A celebration of Melba's life will be 2 p.m. Sept. 15, 2005, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3115 N. 15th St., Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814, to where memorials may be sent. Pastor Dave Bruyette will be officiating.
