Born in Kellogg on July 25, 1913, to Edward Joseph and Emma Louise (McLeod) Champagne, he spent his early years in the Pine Creek area and had many great adventures hunting and fishing. Mac spent summers working for the Forest Service. He served his country with distinction during World War II and earned a Bronze Star. Mac was later employed by Ernie Smith and at Dave Smith Chevrolet, where he retired as parts manager. He was a Wallace resident for almost 60 years and had resided at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan since 2003 until his passing. Mac was a member of United Church of Christ Congregational of Wallace, and Wallace Elks 331. He was an active hunter and fisherman until his last years. Mac was married to Inez L. Anderson on June 11, 1962, in Coeur d'Alene. She preceded him in death in 1975. He then married Inez Bailey on May 22, 1982. She also preceded him in death in 1996. Survivors include his daughter and husband, Linda and Jack Loye of Sandia Park, N.M.; sons and their wives, Les and Carla Hite, Caldwell, Ed and Shelley Champagne, Rathdrum; stepdaughters Luanne Huelleman, Pinehurst, and Gaylene Scott, Pinehurst; stepson David O'Connell, Coeur d'Alene; grandchildren Tim Bright, Kristy Burns, Rob Mac Champagne, and Madelyn Inez Champagne; numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including locally, Christina (Scott) Lambert, Post Falls. In addition to his wives, Mac was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Marsha Ann Champagne in 1988, sisters Jeanette Parker in 1982 and Enbom in 2004. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Wallace Elks Lodge, with Pastor Paul Hegg officiating. Private family inurnment service will be held at St. Maries Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Shoshone Funeral Services of Kellogg and Wallace, 108 Main Ave., (208) 786-5121. The family suggests memorials to Silver Wood Good Samaritan of Silverton, American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
