Red was born May 9, 1915, in Riverside, Calif., and spent most of his life in Southern California, until 1981, when he retired and moved his family to Coeur d'Alene. He was preceded in death by both his mother and father, brother George Covey of California, and sister Betty Davis of Coeur d'Alene. He is survived by his loving friend and wife of 45 years, Irene; sister Dorothy LeChasseur, San Diego; daughter Diane Peck and son-in-law Allan, San Diego; son Dan Covey and daughter-in-law Lynn, Coeur d'Alene; daughter Lucy Hem and son-in-law Gordon, Coeur d'Alene; granddaughters Tori Peck, San Diego, Melodee Covey, Spokane, and Megan Babich, Coeur d'Alene; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. An avid fisherman, Red's passion for fishing began at an early age, when he worked baiting fish on the big boats, then as a tuna fisherman for the canneries during the war effort. He eventually landed his dream job, operating a sport fishing boat and working as a commercial fisherman. He worked on the boats for over 30 years, including operating a 100-foot fishing vessel along the coast of California and Gulf of Mexico. After retiring from commercial fishing, Red worked as an account clerk for the City of Oceanside, north of San Diego, from 1970 to 1980. In 1981, Red moved his family to Idaho, where he loved to garden, play cards, do latch hook crafts and puzzles, but mostly, his continued passion for fishing. A longtime member of the LCAA and LPOIC fishing organizations, Red competed in several derbies over the years with his son, Dan (AKA Team Covey), winning third place in the Big One Derby in 2003 and, just this year, first place in the K&K Derby, on the eve of his 90th birthday. When he wasn't competing in a Derby, Red "practiced" a lot and spent many days visiting, strategizing and swapping fish stories with his good friends at Fins & Feathers Tackle Shop. Red was well-liked and known for his good nature and smile. He will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him. The family will host a memorial gathering 1-3 p.m. Oct. 22 at Vista Bay Marina Resort, Hudson Bay Road, Bayview, through Farragut Park on East Highway 54. Follow the signs.
