She was born on Jan. 11, 1922, in Coeur d'Alene to Walter J. and Mable M. Cox, the second oldest of four children. Barbara grew up in Coeur d'Alene and graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1940. During high school Barbara excelled at sports and was a top ranked tennis player and track star. She was secretary of the student council her senior year. She attended college until the war started then she moved to San Diego and worked in ship factories as a welder. In 1946 she met and married Naval Coxswain Charles H. Buck. They raised their family in Coeur d'Alene and several small railroad communities in Montana and Washington. Barbara worked in retail dress shops as a manager and spent the later part of her career as a bookkeeper for several businesses in the area. Barbara and Charles lived on the lake and enjoyed many activities in the community. She was an avid golfer and bowler and was always at the side of Chuck during those activities. Now together again, Chuck preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 2001. Her younger brother, Thomas, also precedes her in death. She is survived by her two sisters, Patricia Frederic and Polly Calhoun and husband Walter; four children, Patrick Buck and wife Jill, Cathy Simchuk, Margaret Fay and husband David, and Charles (Tim) Buck and wife Melanie. She has eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. and funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d'Alene. Burial will follow after a time of fellowship at the chapel at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association at 2003 Lincoln Way in Coeur d'Alene.
