Born March 27, 1912, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Rev. Frederick C. Doctor and his wife Emma (Nee Ropa), Luther was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church on April 7, 1912. He lived in Thawville, Ill., until 1927, when his parents moved to Wakefield, Neb., Luther attended St. Paul College in Concordia, Mo., then went to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, graduating with the class of 1937. He also received a teaching degree from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., in 1936. He taught schools in Leigh and Winside, Neb., then was called into the ministry. After ordination in Sept. 1939, Luther served as pastor at St. Paul in Concord, Neb., St. Peter in Humphrey, Neb., and St. Matthew in Cedar Bluffs, Neb. He was married on Dec. 3, 1939, to Marie Meyer, and with her, was blessed with two sons and one daughter, Noel, Warren and Judith. By then, he was blessed with six grandchildren. In 1953, the family moved to Omaha, Neb., where Luther served as director of Lutheran Children Service of Nebraska and Wyoming. After 10 years, Pastor Doctor was called to similar work in New York City. His main objective in both places was to get Lutherans to work together in their charity agencies. After this that goal was achieved in New York City, he was called to Coeur d'Alene to head Coeur d'Alene Homes. Here, he set the goal of getting all interested Christian churches in the area to work together in caring for the elderly. His work at Coeur d'Alene Homes ended when the $3 million Heritage Place was well into the construction stage. At that point, on April 1, 1978, Luther retired. He then served as part-time assistant pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Spokane for the next seven years. Three months after final retirement and 46 years after they were married, Marie was killed in an auto accident. In 1986, Pastor Doctor married Janetta Coe, and along with her, his family increased with the addition of three children, Wanda, Jackie and Steven, and their spouses and 11 children. Luther was an active member of Rotary and served as Midwest area chairman of the Child Welfare League of America. He also was secretary and board member of the North Nebraska District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He loved nature, especially the mountains, enjoyed fishing, archery and rock hunting. Luther enjoyed life and the people he lived and worked with. Survivors include his wife Janetta Doctor; brother Fred Doctor; sister Lola Fike; daughter Judyth Rogers; stepdaughters Jackie Knight and Wanda Rommelfanger; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to first wife Marie, Luther was also predeceased by his sons Warren and Noel Doctor, stepson Stephen Coe, brothers Paul and Walther, and sister Ruth. Private burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene. Viewing hours will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 17 at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, who is in charge of arrangements. Memorial service the same day will be 3 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d'Alene, with a gathering at the church following.
