He was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Greenridge, Mo., to George and Mary Alice (Powell) Dowdy. He grew up and graduated from high school in Southern California. George married Frances Jones on June 20, 1942, in Redondo Beach, Calif. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, and then began his career with Standard Oil as an oil field worker. George continued with various oil field companies, ultimately becoming the West Coast and Alaska director for oil tool sales with Smith International. In 1980, they moved to Post Falls, where they built their home, and then moved to Hayden in 1997. George began his Masonic journey on May 10, 1945, continuing to the present day as an active member of Masonic Lodge 328 A.F. & A.M. in Redondo Beach. He was also a member of the Long Beach Scottish Rite, Los Angeles Al Malaikah Shrine, South Bay Shrine Club and Petroleum Shrine Club. Lodges were an integral part of George's life, and in Coeur d'Alene, he belonged to the Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners, Elks and Eagles. George was truly loved and will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances at home in Hayden; son Robert Dowdy, South Lake, Texas; daughter Barbara Dowdy, Torrance, Calif.; sister Mary Wellingham, Grants Pass, Ore.; two grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Dec. 16 at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, followed by reception at Yates Hayden Chapel's Gathering Center. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.
