She was 89. Mrs. Roche was one of the last surviving members of the 1933 graduating class of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy. After attending Kinman Business University in Spokane, she became secretary for the district office of the Works Progress Administration in Coeur d'Alene. She served for many years as a registrar and Election Day poll monitor for her local precinct, at one time earning 25 cents for each new voter she registered. Her precinct territory stretched from Harrison all the way to Fernan Village. Later, she worked as secretary at St. Thomas Catholic Church; secretary at the Kootenai County Civil Defense office; and assistant at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library. Mrs. Roche, who was known as Jo, was born in Sandpoint on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1916, to Judge John M. and Mary Louise Flynn, the fifth of eight children. Her father was a district judge for North Idaho. The family moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1920. She married John T. "Jack" Roche, son of Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Mike Roche and his wife, Mary Kelleher Roche, on June 7, 1941, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. They spent several years in Seattle, returning to Coeur d'Alene in 1947. Her husband, a retired foreman at Northwest Lumber, died in 1985. Mrs. Roche was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and active in the PTA for both St. Thomas Grade School and the IHM Academy. She was also a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America from 1947. She was nominated by the local Catholic Daughters to be Idaho Catholic Daughter of the Year in 1982. Mrs. Roche is survived by her children: Agnes Roche, Seattle, Patrick Roche, Kirkland, Wash., Marilyn Roche Frei, Spokane, Terry Roche, Seattle, Theresa Roche Ruscio (Mike Ruscio), Liberty Lake, Wash., and Kevin Roche, New York City. She has six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Viewing today will be 5-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, which is handling arrangements. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Sept. 8 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, followed by burial at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery.
