He was born March 21, 1918, in Watchung, N.J., to Charlotte (Happe) and James Compton Foster, both of New Jersey. James entered the Marine Corps in September 1940 and served on neutrality patrol off the coast of Africa before the U.S. engaged in World War II. As a Master Technical Sergeant, he was the engineering chief for aviation mechanics working on Marine Corps torpedo bombers and fighter aircraft. James served aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Ranger and U.S.S. Yorktown in the Pacific Theater, and at forward bases on Guadalcanal, and both the Marshall Islands and Gilbert Islands. After the war, James worked in the surveyor's office of the Orange County Road Department in Santa Ana, Calif. In that career, he was the supervisor of a drafting department that created and maintained the Road Department's maps. On Aug. 11, 1944, James married Marjory Lips in Santa Ana. They moved from Santa Ana to Coeur d'Alene in the fall of 1980. He was an ordained Elder of the Post Falls Community Presbyterian Church and was a Boy Scout counselor at Camp Easton on Coeur d'Alene Lake. James was a life-member of the Marine Corps League, Pappy Boyington Detachment, and volunteered in the Toys for Tots program. Survivors include his wife Marjory L. Foster of Coeur d'Alene; son Gene Foster, Santa Ana, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Skip Murphy, Coeur d'Alene; grandchildren Lynn and husband Terry Gay, William and wife Irene Downey, Miss Loretta Murphy, Shelly Murphy Moore, Kara and husband Robert Crisp, and Shaun Murphy; great-grandchildren Rose, Lily, Violet, Daisy, Lucas, Nathan, Ally and Laura; and loving nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Dec. 16 at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, who is in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene. Donations designated for James Foster may be made out to "MCL 966" for scholarships, and sent to Pappy Boyington Detachment 966, Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 5304, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814-5304.
