Jim was born in Coeur d'Alene on March 2, 1924, to Jennie (Holt) and Charles Bernestine Hagen. He was raised and attended school in Coeur d'Alene, where he graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School. Jim then attended Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and Washington State University, graduating with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Jim served as a pilot and navigator with the Air Force during World War II. In 1947, he married Ruth Austinson in Ada, Minn. She preceded him in death in 1998. On Oct. 28, 1999, Jim married Frances Garvey Hobbs in Roanoke, Va. He was an active life member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Big Brothers Association. Jim was the chief of staff at the V.A. Psychiatric Hospital in Roanoke, Va., and had a private practice for several years. He had also served as an expert witness for the federal government. Jim enjoyed fishing, golf, and traveling throughout the world. He is survived by his wife, Frances Hagen of Rigby; daughters Kristine Benois, Roanoke, Va., Heidi (Don) Prentiss, Elizabeth City, N.C.; stepdaughters Bonnie Barnard, Camby, Ore., Paula (Larry) McGee, Russellville, Ark.; stepsons David (Marcy) Hobbs, Rigby, and Charles Hydes, Midland, Texas; brother Martin Hagen, Coeur d'Alene; and seven grandchildren. In addition to his first wife Ruth, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Clara and brother Bert. Private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Rigby, ID 83442, (208) 745-6604. In lieu of flowers, the family desires contributions to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
