He was born to Marshall and Jennetta Hegland on Nov. 1, 1919, in Gainsboro, Saskatchewan, Canada. Raised in Sherwood, N.D., Jesse moved with his family to Thief River Falls, Minn., where he met his high school sweetheart and they were married June 30, 1940, with his parents' "permission." Jesse was inducted into the Army Air Force in January 1944, and served his country during World War II in the South Pacific Theater. Honorably discharged in January 1946, he was proud of his military service. The next 44 years found him self-employed in the aircraft industry. Jesse was proud his company had manufactured parts for the Apollo Missions and other related space programs. In 1990, he and his wife, Ella, moved from California to Coeur d'Alene. In his retirement years, Jesse found enjoyment doing woodworking for his church, helping with his wife's antique business and playing cards with family and friends. The last few years, some of his favorite times were spent at the Senior Center shooting pool and enjoying fellowship with his friends. He was so proud of his marriage and ever-growing family. Jesse is survived by his wife, Ella, the love of his life for 65 years; daughters Judith Grassell and husband Bob, Barbara Jackson and husband Dale, Wendy Keene and husband Mark. He was preceded in death by fourth daughter Laurel in 1998. He will be sorely missed by his grandchildren, Kirsten and Andrew Grassell, Todd, Sean and Ryan Jackson, Jason and Megan Keene, Adam, Heather, Tiffany and Alana, children of Laurel, plus all their spouses, Suzanne, Lori, Tara, Kelli, Troy and Nick; great-grandchildren Kyle, Haley, Blake, Braden, Reese, Caress, Jesse, Daisy, Tanner and Brooklyn; and nephews William, Gary and Robert Hegland. To quote his oldest grandson, "words can not describe how much he meant to us and how deeply his loss will be felt by all." He has touched the hearts of many and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He has left us all with wonderful memories. His deep-felt faith and trust in Jesus will sustain each of us at this time. A celebration of Jesse's life will be 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at Lutheran Church of the Master, Ramsey and Kathleen, Coeur d'Alene, where he and his wife have been members for many years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Church of the Master, or Lake City Senior Center, in care of Tom Moore.
