John's primary focus in life was his family, his business and his inventions. He was born Johannes Halvardsen Hustoft on Aug. 10, 1924, in Nadre Vats, Norway. At age 23, he came to the United States with only $100 in his pocket and a goal to make a million. John was well-educated, and with his strong work ethics and creative outlook, he had overcome many obstacles in his endeavor. He worked on his uncle's farm in Willmar, Minn., and also worked for Great Northern Railroad in Minnesota. After moving to Great Falls, Mont., John continued to work for the railroad and eventually became an inspector. In 1955, he moved to Coeur d'Alene, married Lots Reitz and had seven children. He worked at Potlatch for several years before becoming a builder and was one of the founders of the North Idaho Contractors BA. John then became an investor in warehouse storage, residential and commercial property. His hobbies included skiing with his children, drafting, working on his various inventions, and spending time with family and friends. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. John was preceded in death by his twin sons Peter and Paul Hustoft of Coeur d'Alene, parents Olga Olina (Rabben) Hustoft and Harvard Johannas Hustoft, stepmother Klara Hustoft, brothers Johan, Tomas and Sverre Hustoft, all from Norway. John is survived by his sister Ruth Skeie and numerous nieces and nephews in Norway; his children Kim Hustoft, Sante Fe, Howard Hustoft and wife Molly, Coeur d'Alene, Karen Gravelle and husband Jeff, Coeur d'Alene, Connie Chalich, Coeur d'Alene, and Laurie Browne, Kirkland, Wash.; and grandchildren Ryan, Alex and TJ Hustoft, Cami and Greg Gravelle, Chad and Sara Chalich, and Eric Browne; caregiver and dear friend Elfie Benson; and his loyal companion, his puppy dog! In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835. Viewing will be held noon-7 p.m. Dec. 26, and service will be 11 a.m. Dec. 27, both at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, who is handling funeral arrangements.
