Bertha was born to Gustave and Anna Kasworm on June 11, 1913, in Taylorsville, Utah. She married the love of her life, William Thomas Saathoff, on Jan. 1, 1937. Bert was a graduate of University of Utah and spent most of her life in Salt Lake City. She was outgoing, energetic and bright, and always added enthusiasm to any activity that she was involved in. An active lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City, Bert participated in all activities in her church. She especially welcomed newcomers and helped them feel at home at St. John's. Bert and Tom loved to spend time in the mountains, working in their extensive garden, and bowling. She was an avid member of the Protestant Bowling League of SLC from 1958 until 1998, when, at age 85, she moved to Coeur d'Alene to be near more of her family. In Dec. 2000, Bert moved into Guardian Angel Homes, where she witnessed her Christian faith through compassion, caring and hospitality to all who came in contact with her. Bert is survived by three daughters, one son and their spouses (whom she always considered her own): Lois and Richard Bauer of Boise; Diane and Ronald Gruchow, Lyons, Colo.; Judith and Ronald Bertoch, Tom and Carol Saathoff, Post Falls; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition, her brothers, Martin Kasworm of Albuquerque, Fred and Lenora Kasworm, Rupert, Idaho, sister- in-law Marcella Kasworm, Salt Lake City; many nieces and nephews; and dear friend Carol Wolf, Salt Lake City. Her beloved husband, Tom, preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1973. Three brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death. Funeral service in Salt Lake City will be 11 a.m. Dec. 17 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1030 S. Fifth East. Friends may call on the family one hour before the service. Bert will rest next to her husband, Tom, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.
