He was born Feb. 22, 1926, to Daniel Arthur "Art" Kenny and Lucy Ethel (Norman) Kenny in Portola, Calif. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, uncles Dave and Paul Norman, grandsons Jeff and Joel Calderon and granddaughter Bethany Ann Kenny. He is survived by his former wife of 31 years, Betty Kenny Barkubein; daughters Katie Calderon of Phoenix, Becky LaMont, Puyallup, Wash.; son William H. "Bill" Kenny, Helena, Mont., granddaughter Malika LaMont, Tacoma, Wash.; and grandson Sgt. Thomas Opland, U.S. Army, proudly serving our country in Iraq; three great-grandchildren; sister Jean Foster; niece Adora Lee Foster, Boise; and countless friends across the country. Prior to graduation from Portola High School, Bill worked as foreman to a fire suppression crew for the Forest Service. Achieving early graduation from high school to join the fracas of World War II, Bill served as a naval aviator in the South Pacific. After discharge from the Navy, he became the fire crew foreman for one of only two in the nation's experimental first assault fire crews now commonly known as "Hot Shot" forest fire crews. Realizing he had maximized his potential with the Forest Service, Bill chose to enter the construction industry, specializing in concrete production. He was instrumental in the construction of projects such as the Hanford Nuclear facility, Nike and Minuteman Missile sites, as well as the design and completion of Interstate 90 from Montana to Washington. He was recognized by numerous magazine articles of the day relating to major national construction projects. Bill never met a stranger. An avid fisherman, bowler and golfer, he embraced life and all it had to hold. He truly loved all that was natural and alive. For years, he worked tirelessly for the Food Bank and Meals on Wheels in Seaside, Ore. Bill always fervently supported all members of America's Armed Forces. He was a true patriot. Bill is sorely missed here, but warmly welcomed as his next journey begins. He asked that no services be held, for no one to grieve for him, but to celebrate his life and to remember him as he was. Arrangements are under the care of Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries, 220 N. Holladay Drive Seaside, OR 97138, (503) 738-6622.
