Kunkel, 83 Floyd M. Kunkel, 83, of Coeur d'Alene, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at Kootenai Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1922, to Arthur and Grace Kunkel, in Southam, N.D., where he was raised and educated. He received a bachelor of arts degree in education and taught grades six through 12 in a small rural school in Southam. Floyd married Henrietta Bjerke on Sept. 25, 1942. He then enlisted in the Army and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After the war, Floyd returned to Southam to teach, then moved to Harlong, Calif., and started working in the Civil Service as a safety inspector over ammunition and missiles. The family moved to Tooele, Utah, after a transfer, then to the Panama Canal Zone at Ft. Gulick, and finally to Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. Floyd retired from Hill AF Base and moved to North Idaho in 1976. A member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d'Alene, he was also a member of the Eagles, Elks and VFW. Floyd enjoyed gardening. Survivors include his son, Gary Kunkel of Seattle; daughter Flo MacDonald, Coeur d'Alene; brother Melvin "Babe" Kunkel, Devil's Lake, N.D.; grandchildren Stacie Hobeck, Jennifer Kunkel, Jodi Sphuler and Heidi Kunkel; and great- granddaughter Mckenna Sphuler. Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta, in 1986, and sister Fern Christensen. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Oct. 17 at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene.
