She was the youngest daughter out of 10 children. Violet graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1934. She met Arthur Wayne Baker, who had come to the area to work in the harvest fields in Garfield County from southeastern Wyoming. Violet and Wayne were married in Pomeroy on Aug. 23, 1936. They moved to Yakima, Wash., where their oldest three children, Alvin Wayne, Bonita Jeanne and Grace Charlotte were born. In Yakima, their lives were enriched when they found Jesus as their personal savior. They later moved back to southeastern Wyoming, where their youngest daughter, Artis Jane, was born. They worked in Wyoming until 1947 when they moved to southern Idaho. While in Idaho, Violet and Wayne felt the call to minister in the Gospel. They became the pastor of a Pentecostal church in Jerome, Idaho. Later they moved to Butte, Mont., where they pastored for many years. Violet loved teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School as well as singing and reading her Bible. Violet was always busy gardening, raising chickens and other livestock, cooking, canning and raising flowers. Raising flowers was her favorite pastime. She also worked in a chicken processing plant while in southern Idaho. Violet loved her natural children and grandchildren and was adopted as mother and grandmother to many others. Her door was always open to help those in need. Violet's children were very active in the ministry also. Each of her daughters were married to pastors and her son was a pastor as well. Wayne passed away in February of 1997, which left a void in her life. On Aug. 26, 2000, that void was filled when she married a close friend of many years, Merlin Hawk. Over the past five years as Violet's health wavered, Merlin remained faithfully by her side. He was constantly holding her hand and showing his love for her. No matter how she felt, Violet's face would light up and she was quick to smile when she saw him enter the room. On Nov. 3, 2005, Violet crossed over from this life to be with her Lord. Merlin and the rest of her family will miss her very much. She is survived by her younger brother, Elbert McPherson, and his wife, Glenda, of Salem, Ore., her husband, Merlin; her son, Alvin Wayne, and wife Nancy of Lewiston; her daughter, Bonita Jeanne, and husband Stanley Austin of Lewiston; her daughter, Artis Jane, and husband Wendell Owens of Cave Junction, Ore.; three stepdaughters, Eva Lynn and husband Bruce Grogg of Lewiston, Bobby Jo Wright of Lewiston, Delray Cox of Post Falls, Idaho, 25 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers George and Charlie; sisters Pearl, Myrtle, Edith, Alta, Winnie and Esther; her daughter, Grace Charlotte, and son-in-law Monte Hawk. Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lewiston from 1-4 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at the New Life Apostolic Church in Lewiston. Contributions may be made to the Home Mission, Idaho District UPC in her memory.
