He was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Ione, Wash., to Byron and Phoebe (Perkins) Needham. He moved with his family to Toronto, Canada in 1917 and the family moved to Detroit in 1924. After the death of his mother the family moved to Friendship, Wisc., where they farmed. In 1930 they moved to Clarkston, Wash., where they all worked as farm laborers, including picking cherries and other fruit. The family then moved to "Big Bear Ridge" in the Kendrick area and continued working as farm laborers. Art attended school through the eighth grade at the Taney School House on Big Bear Ridge. He went into the Civilian Conservation Corp at the age of 18. At age 19 he entered the National Guard in Spokane where he served as a sergeant. The 161st Infantry was then called up by the U.S. Army and he served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II where he was commissioned as a first lieutenant. Art was discharged in Spokane in 1944 and he went to work for Washington Water Power in 1945. Art was married to Eileen Fairfield on Feb. 2, 1946, in the living room of the Fairfield family home on Big Bear Ridge. He continued to work for WWP in Spokane until moving to Coeur d'Alene in 1953 where he worked in the sales department for WWP until his retirement as sales supervisor in 1978. Art and Eileen spent their summers in Coeur d'Alene and their winters in Indio, Calif. Some of their fondest memories of retirement were spent traveling with the Coeur d'Alene Good Sam's Club II. He was a former member of the Coeur d'Alene Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and the Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge, and an honorary member of the Coeur d'Alene Lady Lions. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially woodworking which included making furniture to toys. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, at home; a son Terry Needham of Indio; daughters, Pam Claflin of Hayden and Arta Needham of Oakland, Calif.; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hubert Needham. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug., 16, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church, Coeur d'Alene.
