He was born in Iona to Martin and Alice Nelson, one of 10 children. He was preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters. Vernon married his childhood sweetheart, Thelma Dyer, on Feb. 6, 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression. They were married for 73 years. Vernon is survived by Thelma; and daughters LaVern Rutter and Patricia Jensen; 12 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Vernon's first love was his family. He grew up in a family of talented musicians who loved to play and sing together. He used his talent as a guitarist playing in various dance bands with his brothers and friends. In later years, he loved playing for his fellow seniors at various homes and functions. Vernon loved woodworking, and his creations were highly valued by his children and grandchildren. During World War II, Vernon worked at Kaiser Shipyard in Vancouver, Wash., as a welder foreman. He was proud to have been part of producing one Liberty Ship a day. Vernon and Thelma owned grocery stores in Nampa and The Dalles, Ore. He was the manager for Montgomery Ward Company in Coeur d'Alene and operated catalog stores in Kellogg and Oak Harbor, Wash. Vernon retired and moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1993. Viewing will be 11 a.m.-noon Nov. 14 at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, who is in charge of arrangements.
