Born in Ione, Wash., on Oct. 21, 1916, to Esther Lundquist Nelson and Elmer A. Nelson, Elton grew up in Coeur d'Alene, after the Nelson family moved from Ione when he was an infant. He attended Roosevelt Elementary and graduated with the class of 1934 from Coeur d'Alene High School. While in high school, he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Elton was honored as the 1934 North Idaho Tight End. In 1938, Elton married his wife of 67 years, Maxine E. Barnes. He was drafted in the Army in the spring of 1945 and trained at Camp Roberts, Calif. While serving as a foreman for the U.S. Civil Service, Elton worked at the Farragut Naval Facility, Kellogg and Kodiak, Alaska. As a general contractor, he built many custom homes and businesses in the Coeur d'Alene area, including his homes on Stanley Hill, where he lived since 1950. Elton was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His love of fishing and hunting brought him many hours of pleasure in North Idaho. Elton was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, AF & AM, Royal Order of Scotland, Scottish Rite Bodies in Coeur d'Alene, York Rite, Order of the Eastern Star and Calam Shrine. A 50-year member and past Master of Kootenai Lodge No. 24 AF & AM, he was a charter member of the Locomotive Unit of the Shrine. Elton was also a 33rd degree Mason and past Patron of Queen Esther Chapter No. 12 OES. He and his wife traveled to Russia, China, Europe and the Scandinavian countries. He walked the Great Wall of China and visited Israel. During his retirement years, he worked in his shop, making and repairing woodwork for his family of four generations. Elton is survived by his wife Maxine; son Curtis and Carol Nelson, Coeur d'Alene, son Kenneth and Sharon Nelson, Tracy, Calif.; daughter Connie and Doral McGee, Coeur d'Alene; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, six step- great-grandchildren, and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Shrine Hospital, Scottish Rite Foundation of Idaho (Childhood Learning Program) or any donor's choice of charity. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at Coeur d'Alene Trinity Lutheran Church, 812. N. Fifth St., followed by burial at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
