He was 72. Jerry, the youngest child of Jay and Augusta Aaraguard-Madsen, was born June 28, 1933, in Rathdrum. He grew up in Rathdrum and graduated from Rathdrum High School, where he excelled in basketball and football. Jerry married Zoe Kathleen Kopland on Nov. 5, 1949. They would have celebrated 56 years of marriage this November. During the early years of their marriage, they traveled throughout the Northwest, mainly in the siding and window business. In 1963, they settled in Lewiston and started Bi-State Distributing. Jerry continued working in his business right up until the day of his stroke. His main interests in addition to his business were hunting, fishing and sports. He was a member of the Lewiston Golf and Country Club, Lewiston Gun Club and a life member of the Elks. For many years, Jerry and Zoe traveled to Hawaii during the winter months, considering it their second home. They traveled extensively on cruises to the Far East, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and Alaska. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, brothers George, Robert and Richard, and sister Myrtle Percy, formerly of Pullman. His survivors include his wife, Zoe, of Lewiston; sons Reggie (Spike) and wife Kit, Carthage, N.Y., Danny and wife Patty, Kennewick, Wash., and Lanny and wife Sue, Lewiston; daughter Jyl Purington, Kennewick. (Big Papa) was very proud of his 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include nephew Frank and JoAnn Percy of Veradale, Wash.; niece Shirley Ryan, Northridge, Calif.; sister-in-law JoAnn Magnus, Hayden; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses, caretakers and staff at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Their care for Jerry was very genuine. Memorial donations may be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lewis-Clark Valley or Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter. His family granted his wish to become a tissue donor. A huge part of us has been taken away, but in Jerry's memory, we will carry on. Memorial service for Jerry will be 10:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at Mountain View Funeral Home, 3521 Seventh St., Lewiston, ID 83501, (208) 743-9464, which was in charge of arrangements.
