Rankin April 19, 1929 -- Oct. 12, 2004 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, former Kootenai County Commissioner and U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran in Korea. Ron was that rare individual who could envision what needed to be done and then had the combined intelligence and leadership skills required to accomplish it. He didn't expect to be compensated for all of the years he devoted to the "cause" -- whether it was property-tax relief, good governance or his legacy at the courthouse: "The Ronald D. Rankin Veterans Memorial Plaza." His reward was the end result. We could have lost Ron, when he landed at Inchon and during the fight to liberate Seoul or at the epic battle at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea during the winter of 1950. Eight Chinese Communist divisions were trying to annihilate the U.S. First Marine Division that they had surrounded, including a young Marine corporal. Lt. General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller exclaimed, "All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us ... they can't get away this time!" And the Marines prevailed. Later, Ron liked to joke that he wasn't wounded because the enemy didn't have any Kryptonite. Maybe he really was Superman! At least, he was to us -- his wife, his children and grandchildren. "Dearest Ron, I was blessed to be your loving wife for 55 years and four months of time here on earth. Rest in peace, until we are together again with our Heavenly Father for all eternity." -- by Alice Rankin and family Additional Comments: Coeur d'Alene Press - The Daily Bee Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho Volunteer submission - No relation to the deceased. 12 October 2005 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/id/kootenai/obits/r/rankin946gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/idfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
