Born Nov. 1, 1939, in Billings, Mont., she was the youngest of eight children of Clifton and Cecile Rowland. Valerie lived in Headquarters, Idaho, and as a young child attended Notre Dame Academy in Colton, Wash. When her brother, Jim, got killed in the Korean War in 1951, the family moved to Hayden Lake. Valerie went to grade school in Hayden Lake, and at age 10 she got rheumatic fever and was left with a weak heart. Later in life, she had three heart operations. Valerie had a rough life and some failed marriages, but she never stopped loving those who were close to her. She was very generous and would be happy to give you anything she had. Valerie was fun to be with. She was witty, and "little Val," you couldn't help but love her. She loved playing bingo (but she hated the number "B1," which she called the killer number). She also enjoyed crossword puzzles. Valerie lived in the Coeur d'Alene area until about five years ago, when she moved to the senior apartments in Grand Coulee, Wash., where her brother, Carl, lives. Every day, he would come over to her place and they would bet a quarter on the "Price is Right" game on TV -- and Valerie would collect from him. Her greatest pride was her daughter, Alyse, whose love was always there. Her greatest joy was her grandson, Justice, with whom Valerie shared his first birthday just a week ago. Valerie has other grandchildren, but Justice was the closest one whom she was able to see and hold and be a part of his life. Her son, George, with his "little boy" smile is Valerie's youngest. Her son-in- law, Jason, is special to her. In August, her sister and brother-in-law came to visit for five days. They shared stories of their childhood, talked about the future, played some games, laughed and hugged, and then parted. Carlena has a special nickname for her little sister, "Empty" -- no one else calls her that. Valerie was preceded in death by her daughter, Carlene Cecile, son Anthony, her parents, brothers LeRoy and Jim, and sister Teresa. She is survived by her son, George Turpin of Kellogg; daughter Alyse Julliano, Spokane; son Gabriel and Danny Duran, Phoenix; grandson Justice Julliano; brother Carlton Rowland, Grand Coulee; sister Carlena Shove and brother-in-law Donald, Hayden Lake; brother Robert Dean, Lake Stevens, Wash.; "Shove" nephews Clifton, Kenneth, Donnie, Larry, David and Duane and niece Lorena Edwards. Valerie will be missed by all of us, including her longtime friend, Rosemary, and recent friend, Lee. "The autumn leaves are falling ... oh, no, don't let them fall. I'm tying the leaves so they will stay, I lost my Mom and Dad and one sister is all I have. So don't let the falling leaves take her away." God answered our prayers and kept Valerie here with us until we all could gather around her bed and hold her hand and tell her of our Love for her and say our "goodbyes." Thank you, Jesus, for her. Graveside service was held Sept. 28 at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens. English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls, is in charge of arrangements. Please sign Valerie's guest registry and view the online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com.
