Thorgerson, 87, formerly of Hayden, passed away of natural causes July 23, 2005, at Sunshine Gardens Nursing Home. She was the widow of Ring R. Thorgerson, who passed away in August 1992. Ruth was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Kalispell, Mont., a daughter of Joseph and Elva Sloanaker. She is survived by her sons, Eric and wife Nancy Thorgerson of Redmond, Wash., Arne and wife Kathy Thorgerson, Spokane, and Carl Thorgerson, Seattle; daughter Mary Thorgerson and husband Andrew Abt, Sultan, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by sisters Florence Lowell, Spokane, and Mary Jean Smith, Encino, Calif. She grew up in Spokane and graduated in 1941 from Washington State College. In 1943, she married Ring in Seattle. After starting a family, she and Ring moved to Mercer Island, Wash., where she taught home economics at the junior and senior high schools, until her retirement. Ruth and Ring then moved to Spokane after retirement, and later to Hayden, where she lived for 11 years, until her health declined. Ruth enjoyed cooking, sewing, china painting and travel. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d'Alene. She was especially proud of the log cabin she helped Ring build at Black Lake after they retired from teaching. They enjoyed many days together there after it was completed. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. July 30 at Sunshine Gardens, 10410 E. Ninth Ave., Spokane Valley. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hennessey Valley Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 N. Pines Road, Spokane Valley, (509) 926-2423.
