Smith, 69 Gerald Thomas "G.T." or fondly, "Chi Chi" Smith, 69, died Nov. 13, 2005, at Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, Fla., after a short illness. He was born May 8, 1936, in Grosse Point, Mich., to Carmen (Srysinger) and Charles Smith. G.T. was an adventurer. He enlisted in the Army after high school and spent time as a water safety instructor in Japan. Following his college years in Michigan, he became a career officer in the Air Force and a navigator in the Strategic Air Command. G.T. married Toni Wartenweiler in 1960 and was the proud father of Kendra and Eric. During his years in the Air Force, he pursued numerous hobbies, such as downhill skiing, fishing, hunting, trapshooting, flying his own airplane, playing chess, bridge and poker, and dog training. Once retired, G.T. was able to accomplish his lifelong dream of living on his sloop "Halo" and sailing it, which eventually brought him to the Keys, where he had lived the rest of his life.
