(Smith) Somerville, 79, Hayden Lake, died Sept. 20, 2005, in Coeur d'Alene. She was born April 15, 1926, in Longview, Wash., the only child of Maude and Bert Smith. The family lived in Seattle until Jean was 13 years old, then moved to Spokane, where she graduated from North Central High School in 1944. Jean then attended St. Luke's School of Nursing from 1944-45. On Jan. 3, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, William Somerville, in Coeur d'Alene. Both had been longtime residents of Spokane and Hayden Lake. William preceded Jean in death in February 1994. A mother and homemaker, Jean loved books, movies and theater, and was known for her sense of humor. She also did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels for several years in Coeur d'Alene during the late 1990s. Survivors include her son, James and wife Diana Somerville of Spokane; daughter Karen and husband Charlie Estes, Dalton Gardens; grandchildren Angela McLucas and husband Tony, Christopher Somerville and wife Adriana, Stephen Somerville, Scott Estes, Kimberly Shaddox; and great-grandchildren Rachelle Somerville and Samantha Loete. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Kootenai Humane Society.
