Born Dec. 19, 1942, in Washington, D.C., to Frank and Ruth (Antpusat) Strimas, John grew up in Arlington, Va., and Glen Cove, N.Y., where he graduated from high school. He received his B.S. degree from the State University of New York in Stony Brook, N.Y., his M.S. degree from Adelphi University at Garden City, Long Island, N.Y. and his M.D. from Albany Medical College at Albany, N.Y. John was a pediatric resident at Nassau County Medical Center from 1970-72 and the chief resident of pediatrics from 1972-73. He served as a major in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Bragg, N.C., from 1973-77. He was assistant professor of pediatrics at Quillen College of Medicine, a Fellow in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Charity Hospital of New Orleans, and a research associate in the Department of Neuroendocrinology at the V.A. Medical Center in New Orleans. In addition, John was both an assistant professor of pediatrics and program director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, an adjunct professor at the College of Allied Health and Science in Nashville, Tenn., and a Fellow to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He was recently practicing medicine at his North Idaho Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Center in Coeur d'Alene. John had many passions besides life itself. He co-authored with his mother, "Frozen Tears," a novel about his ancestors in Lithuania. He was a talented pianist, poet and prankster. He loved adventures that took him around the world, but his greatest was shared by his loving and devoted wife, Deedee, in the wilderness that surrounded their cabin in Dixie, Idaho. It was in Dixie that he found his "Brigadoon." John was a dedicated physician and medical researcher who will be sorely missed by his devoted office staff. He is survived by his wife, Deedee at home; son Scott Strimas, New York; daughter Anna Strimas, New Orleans; stepsons Jason Cowan, Tulsa, Okla., Brent Cowan and wife Sheryl, Tulsa; brother Robert Strimas, Manorville, N.Y.; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. July 29 at St. Pius Catholic Church, with Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene, in charge of arrangements.
