She was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Gunda Fossum Johnson and Louis Schlick. Her brother, Gordon, was born five years later. She was a farm girl from Stratford, S.D. Evelyn graduated from Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, and later did graduate work at Whitworth College. She married John E. Sylte in 1937 and moved to their present home in Rathdrum. Evelyn retired as a public educator in 1968. She taught high school home economics, Latin, English, library science, and was intricately involved in the school music programs. Evelyn was a member of the Grange, a 4-H Club leader, United Methodist Women, Kootenai County Cowbells, Grandmother's Club, and the Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the Self Help for Hard of Hearing. Evelyn is survived by her children, Joan Sylte Schween, Gordon Sylte, Deanna Sylte-Lucas Starr, and Deanda Sylte Roberts; seven grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gordon, and husband John in 1986. A celebration of life service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Rathdrum Community United Methodist Church, 15468 N. McCartney St. Burial will be in the Sylte Section of Pinegrove Cemetery, with a reception following at the church. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers memorials in Evelyn's name to Rathdrum Community United Methodist Church. Evelyn was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, teacher and friend.
