Tate, 85 Andrew J. Tate, 85, Hayden, died Nov. 1, 2005, in Coeur d'Alene. He was born Aug. 3, 1920, to Catherine Haggerty and Alfred F. Tate in Philadelphia, where he attended school and graduated from high school. After graduation, Andy played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization, until enlisting in the Army in 1941. Before assignment to Europe, he was married to Nellie L. Mackrell on Nov. 25, 1942, in Philadelphia. Andy was assigned as a lieutenant to the 748th Tank Battalion in World War II under Gen. Patton. He saw combat in France, Belgium, at the Battle of the Bulge, Austria and Germany. After the war, he remained in the Army Reserve, rising to the rank of major. Andy returned from Europe and attended Del Mar College and Penn State University, training as an aeronautical engineer. He worked in this field at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station and Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, Calif. He then completed graduate studies at University of Southern California and worked as an aerospace engineer at Vandenberg Air Force Base, until retirement in 1978. In 2000, he and Nellie relocated to Hayden to be closer to family. Andy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nellie in Hayden; son and daughter- in-law, Richard and Lesley Tate, Careywood; grandson Reed Tate, Sandpoint; sister Dolores Mackrell, Grand Junction, Colo.; and nephews and nieces in Philadelphia and Grand Junction. He also leaves his loving caregivers, Heidi, Grace, Vickie and Rene; and his close friend, Ray Fry. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene.
