He had fought a hard battle against his illnesses for four years and is now at peace. Ray was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Fort Sill, Okla., to Raymond and Helen (Logeston) Tomes. After serving 25 years in the Air Force and receiving many commendations for his accomplishments, he retired with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Ray's travels took him and his family all over the United States, as well as living in Japan and Germany. He had a business in Texas for 13 years before moving to Coeur d'Alene in 1985. He was very fortunate to have been able to serve on the Dalton Gardens City Council for several years, and then as mayor, a job he truly enjoyed. Ray loved to travel and did so at every opportunity. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and motorized sports. Ray was a person who truly enjoyed life, his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Jane Tomes at home; son Bruce Tomes, Sandpoint; daughter Cathy Thede, Coeur d'Alene; grandson Jeremy Tomes, Moore, Okla.; sister Patsy Gofourth, Sebring, Fla.; and extended "adopted" family, as well as many nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Oct. 19 at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel. The family prefers memorials to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
