Tuttle, 78, Rathdrum, passed away July 21, 2005. He was a man who loved his community, his country, and mostly his family. Jim was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Spokane, to James and Estella (Corkins) Tuttle, grew up in Spokane and attended Hamilton Grade School and NCHS before being drafted in the Army in 1944. After completing boot camp at Fort Roberts, Jim was shipped to the Philippines and fought on the island of Mindanao with the 182nd Infantry Americal Division. During training for the invasion of Japan, World War II ended. Jim spent his remaining military career as part of the Japanese occupation until being discharged in 1946 and earning his Combat Infantry Badge, Asian Pacific and Philippine Liberation medals. Jim then returned to the Spokane area and married Fern Simpson on Oct. 5, 1948, in Hauser Lake. While raising his family, he began work as a steam shovel operator and helped build Chief Joseph Dam. After settling down in North Idaho, Jim worked at various logging jobs before being hired as a debarker operator at DeArmond's. He retired from Idaho Forest Industries as the head saw filer in 1989. He enjoyed his work, but loved his retirement. Always an outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, boating, camping and his R.V. Jim was also very civic- minded. He was a charter member and president of the Rathdrum Citizens Committee, life member of the VFW, and charter member of Rathdrum VFW Post 9894. Jim was a longtime member and officer in the Lions Club and grand marshal of the 2002 Rathdrum Days Parade. He considered the Don Haney Memorial Fund and Veterans Memorial at Rathdrum's Pinegrove Cemetery as his highest accomplishments. Jim is survived by a loving family of seven children: Robert Tuttle of Spokane, Karen Hawks, Post Falls, Kathy Houck, Rathdrum, Patrick Tuttle, Post Falls, Michael Tuttle, Rathdrum, Andy Tuttle, Newman Lake, Wash., and Susan Heitstuman, Rathdrum; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who loved him and will miss him very much; brother John France, Yuba City, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, in 2003. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. July 31 at the Rathdrum Lions Club. A potluck reception will follow the service. The family prefers memorials to Rathdrum Lions Sight Fund or the Veterans Memorial, in care of VFW Post 9894 in Rathdrum.
