"Bill" Ummel, 82, born May 29, 1923, in Fort Wayne, Ind., went to be with the Lord on Sept. 17, 2005. He is survived by June, his wife of 59 years, in Coeur d'Alene; and their children, Jude of Atascadero, Calif., Jimi, a local Coeur d'Alene resident, Barry from Grass Valley, northern California, and Bradley from Diamond Bar, Calif. Bill also was blessed with his grandchildren, Dylan, Ashley, Sarah and Brandon, Jorie and Libbi, whom he never tired of entertaining. Bill served as a radioman first class on several submarines during World War II, and also during the Korean War. He enjoyed being a member of the local Sub Vet chapter, one of many that participate in the annual Farragut Naval Reunion, even though Bill himself had not. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Coeur d'Alene Golf Club. He also loved to sing barbershop harmony and had served as president and show chairman of the Lake City Harmonizers, with which Bill enthusiastically sang whenever and wherever, until very recently. He was an active member of Lake City Community church. Bill was a retired school principal of 35 years in Covina, Calif. He loved kids of all ages and continued substitute teaching up until school ended in June this year. He served on the local Coeur d'Alene School Board for three years and was involved in the planning stages of Lake City High School. We will miss his encouragement and special sense of humor, which brightened many lives. His family wishes to thank Hospice of North Idaho for their wonderful care and support and encourage any donations to Hospice, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835. Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Lake City Community Church, Coeur d'Alene.
