He was born Nov. 9, 1913, at home on the family farm, in Rockham, S.D., to Mary Wilhelmina (Stammer) and Walter Oscar Yada. He had one sister, Pearl Caroline Yada Michels Robinson. After leaving school, Gene worked on the family farm for his father and other area farms. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCCs) in 1934. He worked as a stone mason in the Black Hills of South Dakota at Blue Bell, building ranger cabins and lookout towers. In 1936, Gene rode a freight train from South Dakota to St. Maries, looking for summer work. His first job was on a farm and paid $45 a month, plus room and board. He later worked at a dairy. On his milk route, Gene met Bertine Bragington, and on Sept. 18, 1937, they were married. In August 1938, son Eugene LaDell Yada was born. After Bertine's death in 1950, he married Katie Sue Merritt Frickel in 1952. In 1941, Gene bought the Crystal Springs Dairy and operated it until 1945. He also served on the first board of directors for the Co-op in St. Maries, now known as Cenex. He worked at the Blue Ribbon Creamery, which was located at what is now known as Bud's Big Burger restaurant, O'Dwyer Hardware and Feed store and at Rathdrum Prairie Grain Grower, tending grain elevators in St. Maries, Tekoa, Tensed, Worley, Rathdrum and Harrison. In 1968, Gene started working at the Potlatch Mill and Complex. At one time, he belonged to the Eagles Lodge, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Senior Center, Senior Bowling League and Gentleman on Horseback organization. After retiring in 1978 from Potlatch Mill and Complex, Gene never stopped enjoying his many horseback rides and the people he met while riding. The last time he was up on his horse, he was 87 years old. He enjoyed working in his garden and sharing the bounty with friends and neighbors. He always said his three favorite things to do were to "eat, talk and never listen!"
