ewiston Morning Tribune, Lewiston ID, 11 Feb 1960
A heart ailment of about 18 months' duration claimed the life of John Dau last 
night at St. Joseph's Hospital.  He was 85 years of age and had been a pioneer 
resident and farmer in the Lewiston area for 67 years.  For the past few years 
he had resided at Hap's Rest Home, and he entered the hospital on January 1st. 

He was born at Kiel in Germany on Jan. 22, 1875. From Germany he came to the 
Gifford area and began his farming career there in 1892. In 1910 he moved to a 
Tammany farm where he lived until his retirement 34 years later. Until entering 
the rest home he had been a Lewiston Orchards resident.

Mr. Dau was married at Lewiston on Jan. 21, 1910 to Maria M. Schatz, who passed 
away at Lewiston on March 3, 1944. He was a member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge 
and the Lutheran Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Anna Wylie of Deary and Mrs. Kenneth 
McIntosh of Tammany; three sons, Fred of Seattle, George of Gifford, and Edward 
of Lewiston; two sisters and three brothers in Germany; and 16 grandchildren.  
BRower-Wann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.   

Additional Comments:
John Dau was my grandfather.  He was born at Nubbel in Schleswig-Holstein, on 
the Kiel Canal. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1890 and worked briefly in the 
north Idaho silver mines before taking out a land claim in Reubens and 
successfully homesteading there for 7 years.  It was in Tammany where he met 
his future wife.  He was predeceased by his daughter Mary M. Thiessen in 1953.
