History of Payette, Idaho’s Post Office


The first Post Office was located in the Washoe area, most likely in some 
store, since the main line of travel for the pioneers was a crossing of the 
Snake river where the Malheur river enters the Snake.

Washoe Postmasters:

A. Rossi-January 19, 1886 to November 15, 1895
H. P. Pomeroy-November 16, 1895 to May 15, 1897
Esther M. Saling-May 16, 1897 to July 1, 1898 when the post office was 
discontinued and all materials transferred to the Payette office.

Payette Postmasters:

David S. Lamme-July 1, 1887 to April 30, 1889
George P. Johnson-May 1, 1889 to May 16, 1893
W. A. Coughanour-May 17, 1893 to January 31, 1897
Tim Driscoll-February 1, 1897 to July 7, 1897
George P. Johnson-July 8, 1897 to March 31, 1903
Bert Venable-April 1, 1903 to April 7, 1915
E. T. Bowman-April 8, 1915 to June 30, 1920
Albert White-July 1, 1920 to October 15, 1937
Logan M. Bowman- October 16, 1937 to August 21, 1957
Glenn E. Levers-August 22, 1957 to May 28, 1971
Forest H. Cockerum-May 28, 1971 to 1978
