Last Monday afternoon County Agent Musser held a gopher poisoning about 4 miles N. E. of town. Gophers are plentiful there and hard to subdue. Sweet potatoes or parsnips are better than carrots as bait to be poisoned. “Mix one-eighth ounce of powdered strychnine (alkalcid) with one-tenth ounce of saccharine. This is enough to poison 4 quarts of bait cut into pieces about one half inch in size. Moisten the bait, then sift on the strychnine-saccharine mixture. Distribute two or three baits in the underground burrow by means of a prod. When the prod has located the underground tunnel drop down the baits thru the small opening with some grass then cover with dirt. An old broomstick sharpened will make a good prod. The alkaloid strychnine is better than the sulphate for this purpose and can be purchased at the drug store for about 35 c. per eighth oz. It is possible that the saccharine may be replaced by using a double amount of powdered sugar as the sweetening agent. In all cases remember that poisons are deadly and dangerous. W. R. P.
