The society was incorporated in 1973, with bylaws, officers and the goals of preserving the history of Idaho (especially Payette County), locating historical landmarks, oral history tapes and a future museum. The society also sponsored a fashion show, a major hit of Boomerang Day. The group has also sponsored field trips to various pioneer cemeteries in the county, as well as field trips to historic places in New Plymouth, Fruitland and the west side of Payette. In 1975, the historical society sponsored a field trip showing the land development of the east side of Payette. During 1975, they society also held a successful find drive to purchase the Old Methodist Church for a future museum which would also preserve the historic building. The painted and stained glass windows of the church were restored this year. Members are now establishing a fund to help restore the old bell tower of the church. They have been holding rummage sales to add to the tower funds. The society’s float won second place in the Organization Division of the County Fair Parade in New Plymouth. The historical society is also planning to hold an open house to show their new windows as well as a traveling photographic exhibit of Idaho Architecture before 1942 entitled “Quick Before It’s Too Late!” They are trying to organize an open house for November. General meetings are held every other month.
