Boise Statesman: George Levy will not die with the hangman’s rope about his neck. By unanimous vote the state board of pardons, as the conclusion of the protracted session Monday night, determined to compute his sentence to life imprisonment. The members of the board made a careful examination of the record and took into consideration the new evidence introduced for the defendant at the hearing on the application for clemency. They concluded that a reasonable doubt as to the defendants guilt existed and determined to give Levy the benefit of the doubt. Without the intervention of the board Levy would have paid the death penalty on Friday next for one of the most brutal crimes that ever occurred in the history of Idaho. The defendant was found guilty of the murder in this city on October 3, 1901, of Davis Levy. George Levy had threatened the life of Levy and this was a potent factor in his conviction supplemented by a strong chain of circumstantial evidence. The defendant was refused a new trial and the judgment of the district court was affirmed by the supreme court. Chief Justice Sullivan and Justice Stockslager refusing to disturb the verdict while Justice Ailshbi dissented.
