The American Legion who had full charge of the day’s program are certainly to be congratulated for the splendid manner in which every detail was carried out. The weather was unfavorable, but the large crowd was unmindful of the chilly wind and threatening rain and seemed to enjoy every part of the day’s program. The parade nearly one mile in length was by far the finest Memorial day parade the people of Payette County have ever seen. Immediately following the parade. Riverside cemetery was a scene of a throng of people many decorating the graves of departed friends while hundreds of people witnessed the impressive ceremony to the watery graves, by the ladies of the Relief Corps, and the Heroic Dead, by the American Legion. Not withstanding flowers were scarce and hard to get, Riverside cemetery was a mass of decoration. The afternoon program in charge of Post Commander J.H. Helman, as chairman, opened with a concert by the Payette County Band, directed by J.H. Stoner, leader. Particular mention should be made of the singing by a specially selected chorus directed by Commander Helman. Reading of General Orders No.11, was given by Brigadier General L.V. Patch and Lincoln’s Gettysburg address read by Ruth Margaret Hall; ceremony of the unknown dead, by the Women’s Relief Corps. The program at the grounds was concluded by a splendid address by Dr. W. J. Boone of Caldwell. The most impressive part of the entire program was the unveiling ceremony of the “Doughboy” monument. Attorney R.E. Haynes gave the presentation speech, followed by an address of acceptance by Brigadier General L.V. Patch and the Dedication speech by Commander of the American Legion J.H. Helman and a short talk by State Adjutant Lester Albert. General Patch in his address of acceptance, was only wound up for a ten minute task but in that length of time said more with a real meaning and with the best delivery of any talk ever given before the people of Payette. It simply put the finishing touch to the Memorial day service in a proper manner.
