Hal Helmick, son of Henry Helmich, formerly of Payette but now of La Grande, Ore., was arrested in this city Monday night by Sheriff Watkins on a very serious charge and is now confined in the county jail at Caldwell, awaiting a hearing. The details of the affair received in Payette are meager but it seems that the young man, who is only about 20 years of age, is accused of having made an attempt about two weeks ago to wreck a night passenger train on the Short Line near Parma, by placing a heap or rock, cross ties and scrap iron on the track. Had it not been that the obstruction on the track was discovered and removed by section hands just before the train came along, a bad wreck would probably have been caused. Nothing was made public about the attempt to wreck the train until the arrest of Helmick, which was caused, it is understood, by the fact that pinned to the top of the obstruction was a note of defiance, written on the back of an envelope bearing his address. Whether or not the note was written by Helmick or placed there for the purpose of throwing suspicion on the accused remains to be seen. It is not known what could have caused Helmick, if guilty, to have attempted such a horrible crime.
