This institution was established in Payette in 1903 and has grown from a small beginning to large proportions and had achieved a commanding position in the markets of the country. The active management for 23 years has been in the hands of Col. L. Patch, and through his energetic efforts and keen business judgment, coupled with a board of directors who are all good substantial business men, the cannery has forged ahead each year until today it covers a large tract of ground. There are two large buildings, one for the canning machinery and the other for storage and the office of the company. More than 125 people are employed for several months of the year, and a large number of the farmers of the valley are engaged in raising peas, corn and tomatoes for the cannery. Peaches, prunes and apples are also canned in large quantities and the average yearly output is about $350,000. In 1925 a branch cannery was established at Wilder, Idaho, and this also has grown from the very start and employs 80 people and has an output of nearly a hundred carloads a year. Fred M. Moss has charge of the Wilder branch. In addition to the cannery the company has erected silos which have a capacity of 2000 tons of silage each year. This silage is sold to stock growers and makes the finest feed. Each winter hundred of cattle and sheep are fattened on this by product and this alone is a wonderful asset to the community. The officers of the Idaho Canning Company are W. A. Coughanour, president; Col. L. Patch, vice-president and general manager; F. M. Moss, secretary and treasurer and A. S. Hincks director.
