A beautiful cake had been prepared by Mrs. A. J. Harker with a red cross on top, was put up for the prettiest girl, each five cent bid entitled the bidder to one vote. Here is where Geo. Scott got in his work as an auctioneer. The bidding came thick and fast, with several young ladies in the contest for the prize which finally closed in favor of Miss Inez Root, of Weiser Cove. The proceeds from the sale of the cake amounted to $51.95 making a total of $122.20. The cake was then donated to the Red Cross and brought to Payette. There is certainly loyalty in the teacher Harry Farnham, the parents and pupils of that section who are striving to make homes in that dry country without water for irrigation where a few years ago was but the home of the Coyote and Jack Rabbit.
