L. Paine, deputy sheriff, was over from Caldwell, Wednesday, subpoenaing witnesses in which two of our residents are principals. A Mr. Randall, it seems, is charged with stealing two horses from Hugh Kennedy's barn last week and afterwards traded them to an Irishman about twenty miles south of here for another big horse and a six-shooter. Mr. Kennedy immediately went after his property and returned with it Sunday. Randall was placed under arrest to await trial, the preliminary coming off at Caldwell yesterday at ten o'clock. The defense's claim was that Kennedy's horses were his by virtue of a trade that had been made between them. The witnesses summoned from here were Charles Spratt, O. J. Sommerville and Hugh Kennedy.
