County Attorney Griffiths is to be commended for manner in which he handled the case against the Payette Chinaman. The evidence indicated that in order to secure a reward a case was manufactured against the Chinaman. Mr. Griffiths refused to prosecute the case. Our mayor and city council offered a reward of $50.00 for the arrest and conviction of boot leggers. It is to be supposed that when the reward was offered they suspected the existence of boot legging in town and took this course in ridding us of the abomination. A few days ago complaint was filed in justice court charging our Chinaman, Louie Fong, with the offense. Hearing was had and he was held to the district court for trial. Before the time for setting the case down for hearing in the district court, County Attorney Griffiths, on the showing made to him by Fong’s attorney, concluded there was nothing in the case and refused to prosecute the case.—Caldwell Tribune. It looks as though an attempt has been made to get fifty in “easy money” and make the Chinaman the scape goat.
