A Meeting at Which Important Matters Were Discussed. The Town Council met in regular cession Wednesday evening. There were present Messrs. Pence, Richards and Platt. Wm. Lauer, the Front street hardware man, presented a written request for a street crossing at or near his place of business. The matter was referred to the Street Committee with the recommendation that immediate action be taken. W. F. Eberle appeared before the Council with a petition bearing the names of many citizens, praying the Council to take steps towards providing the town with some sort of apparatus as a protection against fire. The petition was discussed at some length by members of the Council, and while the general sentiment seemed to be that the town should have a well equipped volunteer fire department, the fact stared the town daddies square in the face that the municipal exchequer is not in a very robust condition just now, and that it would be better enlist the business men in the project and accomplish the desired end by private subscriptions, than for the Council to saddle an additional indebtedness on the town. The petition was referred to the proper committee. Reports of officers were read and referred. Some small bills were allowed and others referred to the Finance Committee.
