C. Chase, pioneer resident of Payette county, passed away at her residence in this city on Friday morning of last week, following an illness of only a few hours. Funeral rites were conducted by the Right Reverend Rhea of Boise, at St. James Episcopal church of this city. The Peterson-Foster funeral home had charge of the funeral arrangements. On April 19, 1858, Mary Ann Platt was born to Susan and Samuel Platt on a farm adjoining the little town of Lynn, Indiana. She was one of eleven children and next in age to the late William Henry Platt, many years a resident of Payette. Her early years were spent in Indiana but in the fall of 1876 she came west and was married September 30th of that year to David C. Chase and the first years of their wedded life were passed in the small rugged railroad town of Silverbow, Montana, not far from Butte. From there they went to Come and Rock Creek, Wyoming, Odgen, Utah, and Pocatello, Idaho, according to the needs of the railroad for a telegraph dispatcher. In 1885 when the Oregon Short Line was laying down its track in the little town, then known as Boomerang, now Payette, Mr. Chase asked to be placed in charge of the new depot and since then Payette has been the home of the Chase family. In the early 90's when the St. James Episcopal church of Payette was organized Mrs. Chase became actively associated with it and her church has ever since remained one of her most cherished interests. It is highly gratifying to the members of her family that she was able to attend D-Day services in the little church only two days before her last illness. Equal pleasure and satisfaction was derived from her long association with Portia Club. That she was its oldest and only surviving charter member in recent years was a source of great pride. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Moore of Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, California, and a son, D. Carl Chase of this city; a brother, Howard V. Platt of Los Angeles, California; four nieces and nephews among who are Mrs. F. C. Marguardsen of Buhl, Idaho, Cora J. Platt of Payette, Mrs. Louis Granger of Los Angeles and Mrs. Thomas White of Rochester, New York; two granddaughters, Mrs. H. V. Gates and Mrs. V. S. Mathews.
