Chase, Prominently Identified With Early History Of Payette, Passes Funeral services for David C. Chase, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Payette, were held at the family home on Tuesday afternoon with the Reverend Robert B. Echols of St. James' Episcopal church in charge. The casket, covered with floral offerings of great beauty and in great numbers, was surrounded by a guard of honor of the Knight Templars; the rooms of the lower floor of the large home were filled with friends and with a large delagation from the local Masonic lodge. There were also present officers of the Idaho Grand Lodge of which Mr. Chase had been a Grand Master. A part of the ritual of the burial service of the Episcopal church was read by the officiating minister, after which the Masonic quartette sang, "Jesus, Lover of My Soul"; the service was concluded by a brief address in which tribute of affection from a great circle of friends and fellow citizens was offered to the devoted wife and children, Mary A. Chase, Danna Carl and Eva Fredricka. At the interment in Riverside cemetery the impressive Masonic ritual was used and another hymn sung by the quartette. All present were deeply moved by this last tribute to one who held a unique place in the affections of his fellow Masons, and of the community at large. Funeral arrangements were under the supervision of J. L. Foster of the Peterson Undertaking Parlors. David C. Chase was born at Meadville, Pa., on April 26, 1853. He traced his descent to English ancestors, who were early settlers in Connecticut. Mr. Chase was married to Miss Mary A. Platt of Lynn, Indiana, on September one of the first forty acres of sagebrush land in the Payette valley, which was planted to orchard, thus establishing the fact that eventually this community was to be one of the leading fruit producing sections of the state of Idaho. In 1892 Mr. Chase resigned his position with the Union Pacific company and entered into the Payette Valley Mercantile company, in the building now occupied by Swanson's store. He retired in 1909 and devoted the greater portion of his time attending to property interests. Mr. Chase took a great interest in fraternal organizations, the Masonic lodge particularly and served in the capacity of Grand Master for the state of Idaho for a time. Deceased is survived by his widow, Mary A. Chase; a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Moor, of Lick Observatory, California; a son, D. Carl, of Payette and two grandchildren.
